Cherokee's Community Partners
Cherokee Heights is very lucky to have
wonderful community partners to help make
our students and families successful.

City of St Paul VISTA Program: Cherokee Heights has been provided a volunteer coordinator to start a mentoring program for students in 3rd-6th grade. The VISTA also recruits volunteers for special events and our bi-lingual classrooms.

University of St Thomas Tutoring Program: Students from St Thomas work closely with our VISTA to work in classrooms one-on-one with students.

Hamline University: Education students have enjoyed gaining classroom experience while working with our school’s mentoring program.

University of Minnesota Spanish Department: Students volunteer in our bilingual classrooms or work with ELL students in our mentoring program.

Page Scholars: College Students earn scholarships while completing service hours volunteering in educational settings. Our scholars work with the mentoring program.

Leadership United: In the process of working with Cherokee Heights to gain a partnership with an area church to provide volunteers and possible family classes.

Get Ready! : The Get Ready program is an early intervention and college awareness program. The program helps prepare fourth through tenth grade students from low-income families and those from groups traditionally under-represented in college with college planning information, academic tutoring and information on career and higher education options.

AVID: To ensure that ALL students:
    * will succeed in rigorous curriculum,
    * will complete a rigorous college preparatory path,
    * will enter mainstream activities of the school,
    * will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and
    * will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.

Minnesota Reading Corps: Reading Corps members are trained to work with kindergarten through third grade on early literacy or reading skills using research-based intervention techniques targeting phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency.

The Danza Azteca: Provided Aztec dance instruction to a group of students to perform at our Cinco de Mayo celebration.

CLUES: CLUES provided a 6-week series of parenting to classes to Latino families. Topics ranged from time management to monthly budgeting. CLUES provides these services to strengthen Latino families so they are financially, mentally, and physically healthier. CLUES also  assists Latinos to increase their educational levels, improve their English language proficiency, and overcome other barriers to self-sufficiency. Finally, CLUES helps low-income Latinos to find and retain better jobs with benefits so that they are able support their families and become self-sufficient.

The Family Project, Family & Children’s Services: The Family Project brings parents together at monthly family gatherings where they talk about issues that are important to them, help each other solve problems, and take action together on behalf of their children. The group becomes a parent support network that promotes the health, safety and success of their children. The family project also provides tutors to work with students.
