| | | | | | Ms. Becker | Welcome to Mrs. Becker's 1st/2nd grade class!
It is an exciting year for learning and growing in Room 108 this year. After working as a literacy coach for several years, Mrs. Becker returns to the classroom to teach and learn with young readers and writers. In Readers' Workshop, children are learning to read books independently at their own reading level. They meet with a teacher in a small group every day, and many of the children also receive additional reading support one to one. Children have a block of time for word study skills, and are expected to respond to their reading in a notebook. They will take books home every day to continue practicing their reading skills.
Writers' Workshop helps children learn to love to write. They can write about what is important to them in their daily writer's notebook time. They will publish at least 3 pieces of writing during the year: a personal narrative, a non-fiction book, and some poetry. Parents will be invited to come to school for our publishing parties. We hope to see you!
Everyday Math teaching is shared with the bilingual classroom, so that all instruction in the room is at the second grade level. The first graders travel to Room 107 to work with Ms. Burnes.
Each day includes an inquiry lesson. Children are curious and love to end their day learning about birds. Favorite topics for future units will include dinosaurs, marine life, trucks, reptiles, and tall buildings, and much more.
Students take home a Friday folder with news and notes about the week. Parents are welcome to communicate through this folder, or by calling the school. 10:00 to 10:30 or after 3:00 are the best times to reach Mrs. Becker.
