Ms. Sundet - Science Teacher
Students come to Ms. Sundet's science lab four times a year, and they are involved in units that are three weeks long. The program integrates hands-on inquiry and exploration, literacy and math skills,

Kindergarten
Kindergarten science is very exploratory and focuses on the skills of observing, sorting, comparing, and communicating.  Topics and themes include the sun and moon, day and night, animals, seasons, trees, and earth friends.

Grades 1 and 2
Science in these grades expands on the skills learned in kindergarten and moves into more measurement and data gathering.  Topics in these grades include insects, balance and motion, air and weather, solids and liquids, plants, and pebbles, sand, and silt.

Grade 3
Third graders make a jump to beginning to organize experiments and do more writing to communicate what they are working on.  Content includes earth materials, structures of life, and physics of sound.

Grade 4
Fourth grade students start the year exploring the human body's systems of bones, joints, and muscles.  Later on, they move into magnetism and electricity, water studies, and cells and body systems.

Grade 5
Fifth graders race marbles down tracks in the fall, while increasing their understanding of experimental variables and the physics of motion.  Other units in the year include simple machines, environments, and landforms.

Grade 6
Creative problem solving and applying constructive ideas to practical situations are at the center of the sixth grade Models and Designs unit. They move from there into chemical and physical changes in matter, mixtures and solutions, and light and heat.

Greenhouse
Cherokee Heights, in partnership with the Youth Farm and Market Project offers classes opportunities to participate in spring greenhouse plantings to use for May Day or Mother's Day. This year, our third and fourth grade classes will also be involved in gardening/planting sessions in the greenhouse fall, winter, and spring.
